At Hindley Green Community Primary School, as part of the QUEST Trust, we are committed to developing children who are confident, respectful, responsible and active members of their community. Through our curriculum, Personal Development programme and wider school life, pupils learn about the Fundamental British Values of Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance.

These values are embedded throughout our school and help children understand their rights and responsibilities, appreciate different perspectives and make positive contributions to their school and wider community.

Democracy

We believe every child has a voice and that every voice matters. Pupils are encouraged to share their ideas, listen to others and express their opinions respectfully. Our focus on oracy across the curriculum supports children to communicate confidently and listen thoughtfully.

Children experience democracy in action through opportunities such as electing School Council representatives, Head Boy and Head Girl and other pupil leadership roles. Our School Council gathers pupil voice, discusses issues that matter to children and helps bring about positive change across school.

Democracy is also part of everyday school life, with pupils taking part in class votes, discussions and decision-making. These experiences help children understand that their opinions matter and that democracy involves listening, participation and respectful debate.

Rule of Law

We help children understand that rules and laws are important because they keep people safe, protect our rights and help communities work fairly. Our clear behaviour expectations are taught consistently from EYFS to Year 6, with positive recognition celebrating children who make responsible choices.

Through our curriculum, assemblies and Personal Development programme, pupils learn about rules, responsibilities and the consequences of their actions. Visits and experiences with police officers, firefighters, healthcare professionals and other community members help children understand how people work together to keep others safe.

Pupil leadership roles also help children understand that with responsibility comes accountability, reinforcing the importance of the Rule of Law in everyday life.

Individual Liberty

We encourage children to develop independence, confidence and the ability to make safe and responsible choices. Pupils are supported to express their views, make decisions and understand that they have rights while recognising the rights of others.

Through PSHE, Relationships and Health Education, Online Safety, RE and our wider Personal Development curriculum, children explore how to make positive choices and keep themselves and others safe.

Our enrichment programme provides opportunities for every child to discover new interests, develop talents and build confidence. We promote equality, inclusion and access for all, ensuring children are encouraged to participate, challenge themselves and discover what they can achieve.

Mutual Respect

Respect is central to life at Hindley Green Community Primary School and reflects our commitment to creating a safe, caring and inclusive community where everyone belongs.

Children learn to respect themselves, others, their environment and different opinions. Through our curriculum, assemblies, stories and wider school experiences, pupils explore kindness, fairness, empathy, relationships and equality.

Events such as Anti-Bullying Week and Remembrance, alongside our values and Personal Development curriculum, provide opportunities to explore respect and responsibility. Pupils are encouraged to celebrate differences, challenge unkind behaviour and ensure everyone feels valued, accepted and included.

Tolerance

We help children understand and appreciate the diverse world in which they live. Pupils learn about different cultures, faiths, beliefs, languages and perspectives, developing curiosity, empathy and an open mind.

Our RE curriculum, assemblies, texts, discussions and enrichment experiences provide opportunities for children to learn about and experience different faiths and cultures. Where possible, we welcome members of our community to share their experiences and knowledge, helping pupils to develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Children may explore celebrations and traditions such as Diwali, Lunar New Year and different cultural and religious festivals, as well as visiting places of worship through their RE learning.

Through these experiences, we encourage children to approach difference with curiosity, respect and understanding, supporting them to become open-minded and responsible citizens who contribute positively to their community.
